It’s crazy how fast the buzz comes back after you’ve been sober for so long.

Whiskey stood there, on my doorstep, just like he had one year before. Except this time, there was no rain, no anger, no wedding invitation — it was just us.

It was just him — the old friend, the easy smile, the twisted solace wrapped in a glittering bottle.

It was just me — the alcoholic, pretending like I didn’t want to taste him, realizing too quickly that months of being clean didn’t make me crave him any less.

But we can’t start here.

No, to tell this story right, we need to go back.

Back to the beginning.

Back to the very first drop.

This is my love letter to Whiskey. I only hope he reads it.

My Review

After reading and falling in love with Weightless earlier this summer, Kandi Steiner has quickly become one of my favorite authors.

And after that synopsis for A Love Letter to Whiskey–I just knew I had to have it.

This book. These words. I was emotionally invested in it from the very first page. But I also have to state–A Love Letter to Whiskey was not an easy read for me. It was the furthest thing from it. I felt like I was on an emotional reading roller-coaster the entire time—riding the constant ups and downs of B and Jamie’s relationship. It was full of angst, heartbreak, love, and the emotions I experienced are exactly why I love getting lost in a book.

“I watched it, in slow motion, as Whiskey fell for my best friend before I even had the chance to say a word to him.”

B’s story doesn’t start out with love. She meets Jamie during her junior year of high school. He initially falls for her best friend, Jenna, after B literally smacks into him while the two are out running.

“I saw him first, but it didn’t matter. Because he saw her.”

After connecting through similar interests and hobbies, B and Jamie soon become the best of friends. Time passes and things happen before more feelings begin to surface between these two. However, there’s a thing called time–and it’s never quite on their side. There’s over a decade of friendship, love, loss, miscommunication, and heartache.

“I always loved that, the first sight of him, the first hit. It was a little jarring, like a slight burn, but the aftertaste was smooth, welcoming, like an old friend calling me home.”

B, I loved her. She was one of those characters that made me feel every single emotion.  She frustrated me, though. There were times I wanted to reach into my kindle to shake her, and yell, “NO!” But she was someone who also wanted to grow. Jamie—he’s Whiskey. He’s smooth, addictive, and perfectly imperfect. I instantly fell in love with him.

“It turned out a Whiskey stain was just as permanent as ink, and I wondered if I would ever truly wash myself clean. Or if I even wanted to.”

Just like the quote above—this is a story that I’m sure will stay with me. I don’t think I’ve read a book that made me feel quite like this one. Kandi’s words are almost poetic. Her words pulled on my heartstrings, and sometimes snapped them. This story was ugly at times. It was raw, the characters were flawed–I was intoxicated on every single word. And at times, I definitely could have used a drink. A Love Letter to Whiskey is one of those books you have to experience, swallow down against the burn, and savor for yourself.
