My Review

4 Stars!

Rough Around the Soul was my first read by Maria Monroe, and I absolutely loved it. I’ve sort of been on a teacher/student binge, but this one was a little different–which I really enjoyed.

“The first time I saw her I was taken by her eyes—huge and hazel, the kind of eyes that take everything in, not missing a single thing. Now, too, I can’t look away, have to fight the desire to stare into her eyes, to try to figure her out, as though if I gazed long enough I could read her thoughts.”

Jake is new police officer in a small town. He’s also stepped in to teach an evening class where he meets Melanie. Melanie, our heroine, is an extremely mature 18 year old–mentally years beyond her actual age. The things she goes through, and the fight she has in making a better life for herself was admirable. Something I love reading in a female lead. I absolutely adored Jake and the protectiveness he had for Melanie. He definitely tried to fight the feelings he had for her, but I continued routing for them throughout the entire book.

“My eyes are prickly, and my nose itches, and I hate it that he’s done something nice for me and all I want to do is curl up in a ball and sob. Stupid asshole.”

Jake and Melanie’s story was an emotional one, but at the same time extremely beautiful. It was gritty at times, and had everything I devour in a teacher/student read! I loved the dynamic between these two, and reading their story wasn’t at all disturbing for me–it was quite the opposite. If you’re a fan of teacher/student books, then I highly recommend meeting Jake and Melanie!
